Cheapest Time to go to Costa Rica: on a Budget and Looking to Visit

    Hey everyone,

I’m planning a trip to Costa Rica but I’m trying to stick to a budget. I’ve been doing some research, but it’s tough to figure out the best (and cheapest) time to go. I’m flexible with dates and don’t mind avoiding the touristy season, as long as the prices for flights and accommodation are low.

Any tips on when it’s most affordable to visit? Also, are there any budget-friendly activities you’d recommend once I’m there?

    Thanks in advance!

If you're looking to save money, I’d recommend visiting Costa Rica during the rainy season (May to November). Prices for hotels and flights are much lower, especially in October. Yes, there’s more rain, but it usually falls in the afternoon or evening, so you still get some sunshine in the mornings.

Plus, the rainforest looks incredible during this time. You can also check out some less touristy places like Montezuma or Puerto Viejo for cheaper accommodation. Don’t forget to hit up the free national parks for hiking – totally worth it! I even found some great local eateries that were super affordable.

Pro tip: make sure to check if any festivals are happening during that time, as you might catch something cool and unique without the usual tourist crowds!

Go in September! Prices drop, and yeah, you might get some rain, but nothing a good poncho can't fix. You'll dodge the big crowds and can score awesome deals on accommodations.

I went in late October and it was perfect for my wallet! Less crowds, cheaper flights, and accommodation discounts. Sure, it rained some, but it didn’t ruin any plans. If you're into nature, this is prime time for seeing wildlife.
I even found tours that were half the price compared to the dry season.

Also, stay in hostels if you can – they’re super cheap and you meet cool people from all over! If you're feeling adventurous, public transportation is really cheap, so you can move between cities without breaking the bank.

I also found that some national parks like Cahuita are free, with only a voluntary donation, and they’re stunning!

        Highly recommend it!

Avoid December to April. That’s peak season, and prices are through the roof! Go for the green season in May. Things start getting cheaper but it’s not super rainy yet.

I stayed in some great places for half the price I would’ve paid in January.

If you're dreaming of exploring Costa Rica without breaking the bank, the cheapest time to go is during the rainy season, also called the "green season," from May to November. This time of year offers lower prices for flights and accommodation, making it easier for budget travelers to discover travel places across this tropical paradise. Although it rains more, it usually comes in short bursts, leaving plenty of time to enjoy Costa Rica’s vibrant landscapes and wildlife.

Another perk of visiting Costa Rica during this season is the fewer crowds, meaning you can discover travel places like national parks, beaches, and wildlife reserves without the usual hustle and bustle. Plus, many hotels and tour companies offer discounts to attract visitors during this off-peak time, so you’ll still get to experience the country’s charm at a fraction of the cost.
