Should I rent a Car in Costa Rica?

Hey all! I’m heading to Costa Rica soon and I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth renting a car while I’m there. I’ve heard mixed things – some say it’s essential, others say public transport is good enough.

I’ll be traveling between a few areas (like San Jose, Arenal, and the Pacific coast) and I want to know if renting a car is worth the hassle. Is it easy to drive around? Are the roads decent? Or should I save money and rely on buses/taxis?

Any advice from people who’ve been there would be super helpful! Thanks!

I rented a car and honestly, it made a HUGE difference! Costa Rica’s public transport is fine if you’re sticking to the main cities or major tourist spots, but for more off-the-beaten-path places like remote beaches or national parks, it’s a pain.

Having a car gave me the freedom to explore at my own pace. The roads were mostly good, but some areas can be rough (especially if you're heading to places like Monteverde or Nicoya Peninsula).

Just make sure you rent a 4x4 if you're planning to venture outside of the main roads!

      Don’t do it!

The buses work just fine, and they’re super cheap. I used public transport the whole time and had zero issues getting from San Jose to Arenal and the coast.

Plus, driving can be stressful with some of those narrow, winding roads.
